International Rural Women's Day 2023
The theme for the International Day of Rural Women this year (15 October), “Rural Women Cultivating Good Food for All”, highlights the essential role that rural women and girls play in the food systems of the world.
History:
The International Day of Rural Women was first celebrated in 2008, following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The day was established to acknowledge the vital contributions of rural women to their communities and the global economy and celebrate the critical role that rural women play in agriculture, food production and rural development.
Significance:
To recognize the work of these heroines in the food systems of the world and claim rural areas with equal opportunities for all, the International Day of Rural Women is celebrated. It recognizes “the critical role and contribution of rural women, including indigenous women, in enhancing agricultural and rural development, improving food security and eradicating rural poverty.”
We wanted to take this moment to thank Beverly White from Northcountry Marketplace in Colebrook for her years of dedication in this roll as not only coordinator and distributor of healthy local food but also for her time and effort look for ways to improve local food insecurity. Beverly’s position on our Advisory Council has been very helpful to ensure that CEDC is more attune to the needs of the local farming and homestead businesses.
It was with great sadness when we had heard this summer that it she was looking to sell her business and building on Main Street. We hope that there may be an entrepreneur that would like to pick up where she will be leaving off in the community. We are more than happy to provide any resources we can to the person that would like to carry on Beverly’s legacy. Please reach out to her or us if you would be interested.
